Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (or Italian sausage for extra flavor)

1 small onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 bell pepper, diced (red or green)

1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce

1 tbsp tomato paste

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp dried basil

½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for a kick)

Salt and pepper to taste

4 large garlic bread rolls (or hoagie buns)

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Sauté the Aromatics: In a large skillet over medium heat, add a drizzle of olive oil. Once hot, add the chopped onion, diced bell pepper, and garlic. Sauté until the vegetables are soft, about 5 minutes.

Brown the Meat: Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef (or sausage) to the skillet. Break it apart with a spatula and cook until browned and no longer pink, about 6-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat.

Create the Sauce: Stir in the tomato sauce and tomato paste. Add the oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), and season with salt and pepper. Allow the mixture to simmer for about 10-15 minutes on low heat, stirring occasionally.

Prepare the Garlic Bread Rolls: While the meat mixture is simmering, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Slice the garlic bread rolls in half and place them on a baking sheet, cut side up. Toast them in the oven for about 5 minutes until just lightly crispy.

Assemble the Sloppy Joes: Remove the bread from the oven. Spoon generous servings of the meat mixture onto the bottom halves of the rolls. Top with shredded mozzarella cheese.

Melt the Cheese: Return the assembled sandwiches to the oven for about 5 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Serve: Remove from the oven, and let them cool for a minute. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired. Serve with the top halves of the rolls on the side and enjoy your Italian-inspired sloppy joes!
