Ingredients

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature

1 cup brown sugar, packed

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 large eggs

2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Cream the Butter and Sugars: In a large mixing bowl, using an electric mixer, cream together the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. This should take about 2-3 minutes.

Add Eggs and Vanilla: Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Then, stir in the vanilla extract until combined.

Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

Fold in Chocolate Chips: Gently fold in the semisweet chocolate chips and, if using, the chopped nuts until evenly distributed throughout the dough.

Scoop the Dough: Using a cookie scoop or a tablespoon, drop rounded balls of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 2 inches of space between each cookie.

Bake: Bake in your preheated oven for 9-11 minutes, or until the edges are golden but the centers are still soft; they will continue to cook slightly on the baking sheet as they cool.

Cool and Enjoy: Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Enjoy your delicious, soft chocolate chip cookies warm or at room temperature!
