Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20 for optimal juiciness)

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

4 slices of rye bread

4 slices of Swiss cheese

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Salt and pepper, to taste

Optional: pickles or jalapeños for added flavor

Instructions

Cook the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10-15 minutes until caramelized and golden brown. Set aside.

Prepare the Patties: In a bowl, combine the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently and form two equal-sized patties, slightly larger than the bread slices.

Cook the Patties: In the same skillet, add a little more butter if necessary and increase the heat to medium-high. Cook the patties for about 4–5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness. During the last minute, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty and cover the skillet to melt the cheese.

Assemble the Patty Melt: Take two slices of rye bread and spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each slice. Flip the bread and layer one slice with a cheese-topped patty and half of the caramelized onions. Top with the second slice of bread, buttered side up.

Grill the Sandwich: In the skillet used for the patties, place the assembled sandwich. Cook over medium heat until the bottom is golden brown (about 3-4 minutes). Carefully flip the sandwich and grill the other side until golden brown and the cheese is melty (another 3-4 minutes).

Serve: Remove the patty melt from the skillet, slice it in half, and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce, pickles, or jalapeños on the side.
