Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (preferably lean)

1 medium onion, finely chopped

1 medium green bell pepper, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup ketchup

2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tbsp brown sugar

1 tsp mustard (yellow or Dijon)

1 tsp smoked paprika

1 tsp chili powder

Salt and pepper to taste

4 hamburger buns (whole wheat or traditional)

Optional toppings: sliced pickles, shredded cheese, coleslaw

Instructions

Cook the Beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Use a wooden spoon to break it up into small pieces as it cooks.

Add Vegetables: Once the beef is browned, drain excess fat if necessary and add the chopped onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic. Sauté for another 5 minutes until vegetables are softened.

Mix in Sauce Ingredients: Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine all ingredients.

Simmer the Mixture: Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer uncovered for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.

Assemble Sandwiches: Toast the hamburger buns lightly if desired. Spoon a generous amount of the beef mixture onto the bottom half of each bun.

Add Toppings: Top with your choice of sliced pickles, shredded cheese, or coleslaw. Place the top half of the bun on to complete the sandwich.

Serve: Enjoy these hearty sandwiches while hot, with chips or a side salad for a complete meal!
